Give Where You Live Foundation & AWA Partnership

Dedicated to improving the wellbeing of the community in which we live.

We are excited to recognise the recent announcement from Give Where You Live that over $500,000 in total was given to 22 local organisations through the foundations Survive & Thrive grant round.

AWA’s has a long and multi-faceted partnership with Give Where You Live who assist AWA with our vision of contributing to an improved and sustainable future for our members and the community.

One of the successful grant applicants was Ocean Mind who received $30,000 which will support the delivery of up to 15 six week programs and weekly surf club sessions over the season.

Ocean Mind provides therapeutic surfing programs for young people aged 8 - 18 years experiencing mental health challenges, social isolation and disabilities. This past year they have expanded their service offerings increasing the reach of support they can provide.

Mental health challenges are one of the biggest concerns for young people in Victoria. Currently, 1 in 4 young people will experience a significant mental health challenge. Research shows that young people tend to seek support from their community (family, friends and other known adults) rather than accessing primary mental health support services. Young people who experience mental health challenges are more likely to be unhappy at school, be absent, or be suspended or expelled. Their learning is negatively impacted because of poor concentration, distractibility, inability to retain information, poor peer relationships, and aggressive behaviour. They have an increased risk of suicide and self-harm and their long term prospects are affected. If young people experiencing mental health challenges receive support when they need it they can live full and successful lives.

You can find out more about Ocean Mind by visiting their webiste.
